This year it\u2019s not a shiny new pencil case that is going\nto make school a bit easier and more fun \u2013 it\u2019s a high-performing computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the world waits for a solution to COVID-19, schools\nare continuing online or in a mixture of online and carefully distanced\nface-to-face classes. One thing is consistent between all school models,\nhowever \u2013 you are going to need technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody knows how frequently schools will have to close\ntheir doors and send students back online. Everybody knows, however, that a\nlaptop may be very necessary to be successful with your coursework this year in\nthe classroom and online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re shopping for a new laptop, remember that not\nall computers are created equally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certain features \u2013 like high performance gaming\ncapabilities- pale in comparison to others, like multiple USB ports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose wisely. And to help you choose, here are a few key\nelements to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

USB Ports<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The computer you need for distance learning needs to have\nversatility. That means it needs to have multiple options and space for the\nvarious things you might need to plug in. In many cases a single USB port is\nnot going to be enough. Look for a laptop with multiple USB ports to ensure you\nhave space for your mouse, printer, flash drives and more. If you wind up\nwithout enough USB ports, you can always buy an additional\nUSB hub<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software capabilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a Chromebook<\/a>\nis lightweight and inexpensive, it does not run Windows, which makes it a\nchallenge to load up some of the most heavily used software in education. Chromebooks may be perfect,\nhowever, for our youngest learners who will be web-based programs\npredominately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To work easily from home on papers and projects, you will\nlikely need to have the capability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and maybe\nOneNote. Be sure you buy your computer with Microsoft installed or with the\ncapability to add them later.Microsoft\nOffice<\/a> can be purchased as a download or preinstalled on many machines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Headphone jack<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Headphone jacks may or may not be needed. In many cases,\nyou can use a wireless PC headset with a USB port, but a headphone jack gives\nyou versatility when it comes to plugging in headphones or speakers or aux\ncords. The more options you have for output, the more versatile your laptop\nwill be. Be sure the laptop<\/a>\nyou buy has a headphone jack, just in case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extra charger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of us plan to set up a single area for school use in\nour homes, but the reality is you might need to move and move quickly if you\ndiscover one area isn\u2019t quiet enough or you are falling asleep. If you are\ngoing to be moving from different spots in your home or possibly taking your\nlaptop with you to the park or backyard to work, grab an extra\ncharger<\/a>. They usually aren\u2019t very expensive, and you can leave one charger\nset up as a docking station at home, and the other can travel in your bag as a\nback-up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can type a quick email from bed\nwithout turning on lights and it\u2019s just easier to work anytime with letters you\ncan easily spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distance learning requires cameras. You are going to be logging\nin to video conferencing software on a daily basis and you want a camera that\nis going to help you, not make you feel silly with a grainy picture. What was once a fun feature on computers has become\nalmost a necessity for educational purposes. Touch screen makes it possible to\ndraw on your screen. You can work math problems with a stylus. Click on things quickly and easily as\nyou navigate through learning software and in your evening downtime on your touchscreen\nlaptop<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonus! Headphones and mic with USB jack<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have multiple people in your home doing distance\nlearning? Grab an extra pair of headphones\nwith a built-in mic<\/a>. You\u2019ll look like a Youtuber as you sign in for English\nclass, but you won\u2019t be dealing with feedback or background noise, and that is\na major win in terms of distractions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

School is going to look different this year. While that\nwill bring many struggles, it might also bring opportunities for your student\nto solidify tech skills early and for teachers to help personalize learning for\nevery student.
